We recently got involved in a project in
Philadelphia PA surrounding the new Liberty Bell project.
Part of the project included chemically etching images in
large panels of 3/8" tempered glass approximately 100"
x 14' long. The etched pictures were supplied in a 35mm format,
we them used photo editing software and applied various filters
to get the rendering the customer was looking for. The glass
was etched and then mounted to steel posts and used as a background
for other Liberty Bell artifacts. The process was developed
by us to apply the solution in a large format to produce a
smooth consistent finish with great success. Presently we
can accommodate panels 60" x 144". The advantage
of chemical etching is that it RETAINS THE STRENGTH OF THE
GLASS and allows for NO FINGERPRINTS, and EASY TO CLEAN, sandblasting
has an opposite effect. Architectural possibilities of the
process is limitless. |

What is Glass Etching?
Glass etching is the abrading or roughening of a piece of glass in selected areas in order to produce a design. It is a way to produce a “frosted” design on the surface of a piece of glass, but it is much more than that! It can also be used to carve a design deep into the glass or to produce a shaded design that looks like delicate airbrushing but is permanently etched in the glass. Using the same equipment and techniques, it is also possible to etch or carve on stone or ceramic. |
